Postelle Professor and Chancellor’s Professor Wes Hines has been selected to receive the American Nuclear Society- Decommissioning and Environmental Science Division (DESD) Award of Excellence.
Hines is being recognized for his efforts and achievements to further the advancement of knowledge of nuclear decommissioning.
Hines’ work at the University of Tennessee involved the creation of an undergraduate minor in decommissioning and environmental management. This unique program is the first of its kind in the country. The minor’s focus included civil engineering and project management as well as nuclear engineering and health physics topics in the course work. The program’s creation was developed in partnership with UCOR (the cleanup contractor in Oak Ridge for DOE-Oak Ridge) to fulfill a national need for a workforce with expertise in radioactive facility deactivation and decommissioning.
“This award is the culmination of a partnership between UCOR, the Department of Nuclear Engineering, and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering,” Hines said. “It is always a pleasure to collaborate with industry to fill a workforce gap and see our graduates have successful careers.”
Hines is a Fellow of ANS and has been honored by the group several times previously, including the Robert L. Long Training Excellence Award, the H.M. Hashemian Mid-Career Award, and the Arthur Holly Compton Award in Education, given as a lifetime achievement award for contributions to nuclear science or nuclear energy education.
Hines will be presented with his ANS-DESD Division award during the DESD/RRSD Plenary II on November 18 at the ANS Winter Conference and Expo in Orlando, Florida.
