Nuclear Engineering Scholarships Provide Opportunity

As a self-funded graduate student in the Department of Nuclear Engineering, Christina Prah appreciates every bit of financial assistance to help pursue her degree. It allows Prah to direct more of her energy towards research and professional growth in the field of nuclear security and nonproliferation.

This year, Prah was the recipient of the Tom & Marcia Magette Nuclear Scholarship, which provides $1,500 of academic support to a student pursuing graduate study.

“It has a tangible impact. Graduate studies in nuclear engineering come with a heavy workload and financial demands, especially when balancing research, coursework, and professional development,” Prah said. “This scholarship helps me stay focused on the academic and technical goals that actually move my work forward, rather than worrying about financial logistics.”

Prah is one of 29 NE students who are benefitting from endowment-based scholarships this year. They range from freshmen from local high schools to seniors preparing to enter the workforce to PhD students doing innovative research.

“I am genuinely grateful to the donors and the nuclear department for recognizing the value of investing in students,” Prah said. “Scholarships like this don’t just help individuals like me; they also strengthen the field by ensuring capable people can continue doing meaningful work without financial barriers.”
