Professor and Pietro F. Pasqua Fellow Nicholas Brown was selected to the inaugural Nuclear News “40 Under 40” list of industry influencers and leaders of the nuclear community that is published in December’s issue.
The American Nuclear Society created the list to recognize the up-and-coming young professional talent who are helping contribute to the present and shape the future of the trajectory of nuclear science.
Candidates were nominated by either their workplace, institution, or a fellow ANS member. Their qualifications included technical achievements, professional achievements, and leadership and impact.
“I am very honored to receive this recognition, which would not have been possible without the excellent work of my graduate students,” Brown said. “My goal is to be a leader in the nuclear field focused on groundskeeping rather than gatekeeping. I want us to work together to create a positive environment where we can all succeed.”
Brown, 38, is an expert in nuclear fuel safety, thermal fluid sciences, and advanced nuclear reactors. He has authored or co-authored more than 220 refereed publications and two book chapters and been the principal or co-principal investigator for more than 25 awards and funded grants and contracts with a total value of more than $20,000,000.
Brown received his bachelor’s degree in nuclear engineering from the University of New Mexico and obtained his master’s and PhD degrees in nuclear engineering from Purdue University.
He joined the UT faculty in January 2019 after spending two years as an assistant professor at Penn State University. Previously, Brown worked at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Brookhaven National Laboratory.
“I am most proud of the achievements of my graduate students: seven PhD graduates and 21 MS graduates from my group, along with 10 PhD students and three MS students that will hopefully be graduating in the next few years,” Brown said. “I am also proud of the fact that the majority of my more than 220 peer-reviewed publications were co-authored with my graduate students.”
