Associate Professor Nick Brown spoke to WVLT about Russia’s attack on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine. Zaporizhzhia is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, with six reactors that can power enough energy for four million homes.
“The reactor design here is very different than the design at Chernobyl. These are much more modern and robust plants,” Brown said. “But nevertheless, they are not designed to withstand direct attacks from a modern military.”
He added that power plant workers are doing everything they can to safely shut down the reactors, but that scenario will still result in a humanitarian issue, leaving Ukrainians without power and heat in the winter.
