Hines Recognized by ANS

Wes Hines presents an award at the 2019 CONTE.

Banquet speaker Wes Hines presents the Robert Long Award at the 2019 Conference on Nuclear Training and Education.

Nuclear Engineering Department Head Wes Hines is celebrating a number of successes just weeks into the spring semester.

Nuclear News: Hines was privileged to share the news of the department’s growth when an article he wrote was selected and published as a cover story in the January 2019 issue** of Nuclear News, published by the American Nuclear Society.

In the article, titled “U of Tennessee Nuclear Engineering: A Decade of Transformation,” he outlines the decade-long process of turning the UT Department of Nuclear Engineering into the largest nuclear engineering PhD program in the country using strategic processes. Now, a decade later, the growth is measurable: the program graduated two PhD students in 2008 and 24 students in 2018.

CONTE: Earlier this month he gave a talk at the 2019 Conference on Nuclear Training and Education (CONTE) entitled “The Transformation of a Nuclear Engineering Department,” the content of which was similar to his recent article in Nuclear News.

At the conference he also was honored to be appointed general chair of the organization’s next conference in 2021.

“I am honored to be asked to chair CONTE, the topical meeting of the American Nuclear Society’s Education Training and Workforce Development Division,” said Hines. “I look forward to the next conference as a venue for educational leaders to share best practices for nuclear training and education.”
