Nuclear Alums, Faculty Receive ANS Honors

Six representatives of the Department of Nuclear Engineering will be honored at the American Nuclear Society Annual Conference June 15–18 in Chicago.

Alumnus Jonathan Chavers (BS ‘09), the director of nuclear fuel and analysis at Southern Nuclear Operating Company and a member of the NE Board of Advisors, will be awarded the rank of Fellow of ANS. Fellow is the highest membership grade awarded by ANS and recognizes outstanding contributions and accomplishments in the field of nuclear science and engineering.

Chavers earned the rank of Fellow in recognition of his pivotal leadership in advancing the U.S. Accident Tolerant Fuel (ATF) program and other innovations in commercial nuclear fuel for light water reactors.

Alumni Fan Zhang (MS ’19, PhD ’19), an assistant professor at Georgia Institute of Technology, and Nathan Capps (BS ’12, MS ’13, PhD ’16), a senior R&D staff scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, will both receive the ANS Landis Young Member Engineering Award.

Zhang was awarded for her pioneering contributions to nuclear cybersecurity through innovative machine learning approaches and developing patent-pending technology. Capps was awarded for his leadership in advancing the safe and economic expansion of nuclear power by leveraging advanced modeling and simulation to facilitate accelerated testing and licensing of high burnup and accident-tolerant fuel.

Worrell is being honored for her commitment and leadership of the ANS Student Section Committee, providing perspective and mentorship for students of nuclear science and technology.

Coble is being honored for her commitment and leadership in the production of the journal Nuclear Technology, while Carasik, as assistant professor in the Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering at Virginia Commonwealth University, is being honored for his commitment and leadership in the production of the journal Fusion Science and Technology.
